Advent Week 3 — The Love in the In-Between: When the Promise Becomes a Person

Reading: Luke 1:46–55 (NASB) (The Magnificat)

Summary:
Isaiah promised God would come—valleys lifted, mountains made low. Mary sings that it’s already happening. In her song, God’s love is not sentimental but revolutionary: the proud are scattered, rulers are brought down, the humble are lifted, the hungry are filled. God’s love chooses the unlikely (a “bondslave” from Nazareth), keeps covenant promises (all the way back to Abraham), and begins setting the world right by coming near in flesh. Advent love is costly, disruptive, and life-changing—because it’s the love that will lead Jesus to the cross and beyond.

Questions:

  1. Mary sings in past tense (“He has…”). What does her confidence teach us about trusting God when fulfillment still feels incomplete?

  2. Where do you see the three false securities Mary confronts—power, pride, prosperity—tempting you to place your trust somewhere other than God?

  3. Who are “the lowly” and “the hungry” in your everyday world (family, workplace, neighborhood)—the people easily overlooked?

  4. Mary calls herself God’s servant (bondslave). What might humble availability look like for you this week—“May it be done to me according to your word”?

  5. The Magnificat is worship and witness. If someone watched your week, what would they learn about the kind of love you believe is real?

Practice (Revolutionary Love in Ordinary Places):

  • Worship: Light the Love candle. Read Luke 1:46–55 aloud slowly. Then pray: “Lord, reorder my loves—make my life a living Magnificat.”

  • Service: Choose one concrete act of costly love for someone on the margins of your attention: a meal, a gift card, a practical errand, a listening conversation, an invitation to the table. Let it cost you time, comfort, or convenience.

  • Announce: Speak one true, specific word of blessing over someone this week—especially someone who rarely receives it. Name the good you see, and let your voice participate in God’s lifting-up work.
