Reading: Isaiah 40:3–5; Philippians 2:1–11 (NASB)
Summary:
Into December’s bone-deep exhaustion, Isaiah announces a voice in the wilderness: God is on the move. The King Himself levels valleys and lowers mountains—He makes the road. And when He acts, all people see His glory together. Our part is to “prepare the way” by taking the peacemaker’s posture—humility over pride, presence over avoidance, others before self (Phil 2). In Advent, we practice the Incarnation: drawing near like Jesus, who emptied Himself to make peace by the cross.
Questions:
- Where do you feel the “rough places” this season—relationships, rhythms, inner life—that need God’s leveling (Isa 40:3–5)?
- What’s the difference between peacekeeping (avoiding) and peacemaking (engaging with humility)? Which do you default to and why?
- Philippians 2 calls us to consider others “more important” and to take on Jesus’ mindset. What would that look like at your next gathering?
- “All flesh shall see it together” (Isa 40:5). How does God’s public peace stretch you beyond a private, personal comfort?
- Who is one person you could approach this week as a safe person—honoring their dignity, speaking a genuine affirmation, and (if needed) naming truth with grace?
Practice (Waiting with Active Peace):
- Worship: Light the Peace candle. Pray Philippians 2:5–11 slowly as a breath prayer: “Jesus, give me Your mind; lower my mountains; make me a peacemaker.” Read Isaiah 40:3–5 aloud.
- Service (Peacemaking Step): Before a difficult encounter, pause and pray: “Lord, I will enter as a peacemaker.” Then do one concrete act: offer a sincere apology, initiate a clarifying conversation, or meet a practical need without fanfare. Hold healthy boundaries as needed.
- Announce (Become a Safe Person): Each day, name one true affirmation to someone (not flattery). Notice good, say it out loud, and let your presence be a gift.
