“Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.”
-Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The Park Community is ten years old this coming January. For a few of you, The Park turned ten this past summer when in 2009 we began to whisper about God doing a new thing in SA. As I consider the next ten years I think about the state of the universal church and the opportunities for the church in our city, and then I ask… what role are we to play? What role are Shannon and I supposed to play? What role are the leaders and staff of The Park supposed to play? I believe the Father has given me clarity, that we have gathered and loved, but now we need to commit ourselves to making disciples who make disciples.

In 2020 we are rolling out Discipleship Core Groups.
A Discipleship Core is an intentional discipleship pathway where a group of 8-10 adults meet twice a month for three semesters. The goal for the Discipleship Core is to lead others in becoming proficient at living out The Park’s six core values: presence, sacrifice, submission, family, renewal, and sending. Discipleship needs to be intentional and purposeful. On the one hand, you can say that everything in life is discipleship, and you wouldn’t be wrong. However, we have discerned a specific pathway and believe it will produce life in those you lead while bolstering your faith on the journey.

The Discipleship Core and our existing Missional Communities are meant to work together in tandem.  We have learned through extensive conversations that most of The Park’s missional communities are tightly knit gospel friendships that serve a critical place in the lives of most of our congregation.  That’s a beautiful thing, but we are also learning that those MC’s struggle to find seats for new people and rarely multiply or launch new leaders. Our hope in 2020 is to continue the critical role of the MC and at the same time create a smaller community that is committed to multiplication.

If you have questions, need more clarity, are interested in leading a Discipleship Core, or would like to participate then please contact your parish pastor or send me a note scott@theparksa.org

2019 Advent Guide

Advent comes from the Latin word adventus meaning  “coming” or “visit.” During the season of Advent, we prepare for and anticipate the coming of Christ. The Park has created a Hymnology guide which includes a weekly candle lighting scripture and prayer. These are the same readings we will be doing each Sunday during the season. Each week also includes a devotional for use in your personal study or in missional community groups along with discussion questions. For a digital copy of the guide you can click here.
