Reading: Hebrews 5:1–10; 7:1–28
Hebrews reminds us that the reason priests exist at all is because something is broken. We long to approach God, but we feel the distance between who we are and who we should be.
Human priests could sympathize with weakness, but they were limited—sinful themselves, temporary, and unable to finish the work.
Jesus is the priest we truly need. He did not appoint himself; he was appointed by the Father. He entered our suffering, prayed with tears, and learned obedience through what he suffered. He understands us from the inside.
Unlike every other priest, Jesus’ priesthood does not end. He lives forever, intercedes for us continually, and saves completely. He is both the priest and the sacrifice, and his work is finished.
Because of this, we no longer need to strive to earn access to God. We are invited to approach the throne of grace with confidence, resting in a salvation that is secure in Christ.
Discussion Questions
- Hebrews raises the question: Can I really approach God?
When have you felt distance from God, and what contributed to that feeling? - The sermon described how we often create “replacement priests” (achievement, self-improvement, performance, even spiritual activity).
What are some ways people try to make themselves acceptable or worthy? - Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus understands our weakness and suffering.
How does it change your view of God to know that Jesus experienced anguish, temptation, and hardship? - Hebrews 7 says Jesus is able to save completely and always lives to intercede.
What does it mean to you that Jesus’ work for you is not only finished in the past but active in the present? - The invitation of Hebrews is to approach God with boldness.
What usually makes it difficult for you to come to God honestly? - The message suggested several things we can “stop” (earning, self-condemnation, striving to prove ourselves).
Which of those do you most need to release right now?
Practice — Approaching with Honesty
This week, take a few minutes each day to practice approaching God honestly.
- Come – Set aside 5 minutes of quiet and become still.
- Speak Honestly – Tell God what is actually on your heart—fear, failure, gratitude, or exhaustion.
- Receive – Read Hebrews 4:16 slowly and end with this prayer:
“Jesus, my Priest, help me receive your mercy and grace today.”
