My Name is Des, I come from a family of nominal Catholics. We would go to church on the high holidays: Christmas, Easter and when we weren’t too tired from a Saturday night’s festivities. I received all of my sacraments and I would try not to sin. I thought I was doing well because I could check off some good behavioral boxes! You could say that I knew about Jesus, but I didn’t know Jesus. I did not have a personal relationship with Jesus. Until I met Mrs. Jeanie Robins, she was my 7th grade computer teacher and I thought she was the coolest and most beautiful lady I’d ever seen.
I stayed behind one day, to ask her: “You have something that I want, what is it?” She knew exactly what I was talking about and told me it was Jesus.
She invited me to a Tuesday night youth group and surprisingly my mom said I could go. That first Tuesday that I attended Chi Alpha I responded to Pastor Doug Robins when he extended an invitation in the alter call. I wanted to be good before that evening, and now I had the ‘why’, the purpose and reason, encouragement and motivation, it was all because of Jesus.
As I learn more about God through reading and studying His Word, I find myself realizing that I don’t know much at all. It’s a humbling place to be, but the best place because it’s where God’s intimate presence is and I feel so grateful. I’m a life long learner, He’s my teacher and I’m in the best hands with Him as my leader.
