Couldn’t you keep watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

~Matthew 26:40b-41

Prayer is hard work. It is a full body, mind, and spirit act of worship. It requires us to submit ourselves, our plans, and our desires at the feet of Jesus. It requires us to quiet the noise, silence the things stimulating our brains, and to kneel before the Father and focus on Him. It requires us to “keep watch” or to “be on the alert” so that we will not fall into temptation. It requires our undivided attention to see where God is moving, not only in our lives but the lives of your brothers and sisters in Christ. Prayer is the thing our spirit so longs for, but our flesh is repulsed by it. Thankfully, Jesus teaches us how to pray in Luke 11 with the Lord’s Prayer. He teaches us that prayer is the most unselfish thing we can do. Jesus never uses “me” or “ I” but he always uses “us” or “our.” “OUR Father,” “Give US OUR daily bread,” and “Lead US not into temptation but deliver US from the evil one.” Let us pray the way Jesus taught us. Let us lift up each other in prayer. Let us lift up our neighbors, our friends, our enemies in prayer this week.

I think John Calvin said it best, “to make intercession for others is the most powerful and practical way in which we can express our love for them.
