Greetings! Below you will find questions which reference the sermon preached on Sunday, January 18th, 2015 at The Park. This week we studied Chapter 11 of Genesis. Have someone in your group read this section of scripture.

Each week new questions are posted to track along with the sermons. Work hard to facilitate discussion. Listen to the hearts around the room and close with prayer.

Intro to Tent & Altar:

Abraham was a man called and sent by God. He is revered in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity today. Abraham’s name was originally “Abram”, which means ‘the father is exalted’. His name was changed to “Abraham”, which means ‘father of a multitude’, when God initiated His covenant with him (Genesis 17). God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many people. As we study his life and journey of faith in Genesis, we believe we will be challenged and encouraged by what we see and hear. Simply put, Abraham trusted God and believed God could accomplish all that He had promised.

  • Describe a time when God seemed to disrupt your plan–when something seemed like it should have worked out, but it didn’t. How did it make you feel in the short term? In the long term?
  • Why you think God disrupts plans in the way he does? Would we learn from and agree with God’s plan if he was more forthcoming, or would we try and convince him of the merits of our way vs his?
  • Discuss James chapter 4 and compare it with God’s disruption of the people’s plans to build the Tower of Babel. Why is there such strong language by James about pride-filled plans like in Genesis 11 and James 4?
  • Ask any parents in your group why they sometimes say “no” to their children, even when their children may cry. Is it because they like seeing their children cry, or is it for another purpose? Ask them how hard it is to sometimes say “no.” Discuss how God saying “no” to a plan in your life strengthened you. Discuss how you now see the purpose.
