Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way – with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge – God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.

Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Got is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Corinthians 1:3-9

Bill battled abdominal cancer for three years. Bill was in his early 50’s. He had been a middle school teacher, a father, and had recently become a grandfather. He also was a Christian who took Paul’s words to heart.

During Bill’s illness the Lord continually infused him with spiritual gifts that allowed him to soar above the battle raging within his body. When others stumbled over words to express their sympathy, he spoke words of encouragement. In Christ, Bill was “enriched in every way – with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge…” Family, friends and neighbors came to nurse and encourage him, but walked away receiving the blessing of his witness.

And the Lord kept Bill firm to the end. Bill’s life and his death were testimony to Christ’s faithfulness. As we consider today’s passage let us examine how God has enriched our lives. Let us challenge each other to use these spiritual gifts for our mutual edification. And let us remain firm in the Lord to the end.
