Intro to Gospel of John:
This Gospel is unique with regard to the 4 first-hand accounts of the life of Jesus. It was likely the last of the 4 written and focuses much of it’s view on the deity of Jesus. Like today, the question of Jesus’ nature and source of power is constantly being debated and the heart of John’s gospel is to give us a clear, concise, unashamed view of the Son of God. It is here in John that Jesus makes claims like, “I am the Bread of Life”, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”, and “I am the Light of the world”. Reading the Gospel of John will provide you with an exalted view of Jesus as God in the flesh, sent to proclaim the good news.
- Basically what Jesus was telling His disciples was, “They shall cast you out of the congregation of Israel in general, the national church of the Jews; shall debar you from the privileges of that, and put you into the condition of an outlaw.” How does that challenge you in how far you are willing to follow Jesus?
- Since the following was true, “The sending of the Spirit was to be the fruit of Christ’s purchase, and that purchase was to be made by his death, which was his going away.” How do you think the disciples felt about the Spirit coming and Christ going?
- If given the option of having Jesus or the Holy Spirit, which would you choose? Why?
- The Holy Spirit will convict the world in the area of sin that results from disbelief in Jesus (16:9). Who do you know that desperately needs you to pray for the Holy Spirit to convict of disbelief?
- In John 16:12, Jesus doesn’t fully disclose all of the details of what was going to happen to the disciples because they would not be able to bear them. What are some circumstances in your own life that have occurred that would have been too much to bear beforehand, but that you were able to get through due to your faith in the Holy Spirit?
